Protection of the Great Wall

When we admire the mystery and wonder of the Great Wall, we should bear in mind that this world famous wonder also experiences something unfortunate.

Now in China, according to the survey by China's Great Wall Academic Society, only 20% of Ming Dynasty walls exhibit intact body; no more than 30% can be recognized as historical relics; the total coverage of the body and the site is no more than 2500 kilometers.

Experts say, the damage of the Great Wall is caused by two factors. One is natural phenomenon, such as wind, rain and earthquake. The other is human activities. For example, the damage of Ming Dynasty wall in Shaanxi province is caused by the construction of transportation and energy project. Other activities include traveling to and restoration of the Great Wall. Sometimes, bricks of the Great Wall are carried away for personal and factory uses.

Therefore protection of the Great Wall is a critical issue at present. It is said that the 10-year program of Great Wall Protection has been underway, beginning with the investigation of the Great Wall in Hebei and Gansu province.
