Terracotta Warriors and Horses

The life sized terracotta warriors and horses were arranged in battle formations, symbolically guarding the Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Maybe the first emperor of Qin Dynasty was eager to achieve his ambition after death. Between 1974 and 1976, three massive vaults were discovered. The three vaults were determined by archaeologists to be pits for burial objects accompanying the tomb of Qin Shi Huang. Vault No.1, which is the largest, contains 6,000 life-size terra-cotta figures of armed warriors and horses. It is 351 yards long from east to west, 68 yards wide from north to south, and 5.47 yards deep, covering an area of 15,601 square yards.

 

In October 1979, an on-site museum was built above it. Since then, two additional structures had been built to cover the vaults No.2 and No.3 ranging from 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet in height, the vivid life-size warrior figures are clad in armor or short gowns belted at the waist, with leggings and tightly-lashed boots. Their weapons consist of bows and arrows, swords and spears.

The History of Emperor Qin Shihuang

Emperor Qin Shihuang was born in the year 259 BC. He was regarded as the first person who unified China .In 247 BC when he was 13 years old, by the reason of his father's death, he was awarded the position of crown prince with helps of his mother and a prime minister Lu Buwei . He finally sized the power from them and exiles the prime minister when he was 22 years old. Originally, his mother was a very beautiful concubine of the prime minister. Later, she began to fall in love with another officer Laoai and they wanted to launch a rebellion against Qin Shihuang. Subsequently, those two were killed by the emperor and their illegal sons were all assassinated. After 10 years conquering war advocated by emperor Qin, in 221 BC he unified all of China and built up the Qin Dynasty.

 Ambitious as he was, he began to build Great Wall, imperial palaces, Mausoleum and Qin's Terra-Cotta warriors and horses. He unified Chinese language script, shape of currencies and standard of weight measurement. In order to prevent of the scholar thoughts differences, he hence executed the activity "Burning of books and Burying of Confucian scholars." Also he had many doctors produced a kind of special Chinese medicine for enlasting his life. In his fifth inspection tour outside, when he was 50 year old, he suddenly died of disease during the road. His second son came into throne by the means of forcing his elder brother commit suicide. But because of his curial policies, his reign was ended soon after a few years later.
