Yuyuan Garden , maybe the most celebrated classical Chinese garden in Shanghai , is situated in the northeastern part of Shanghai with a long history of more than 400 years. It belongs to the classical private Chinese Garden

The history of Yuyan Garden can be dated back to the Qing Dynasty. In 1559, a Ming official named Pan Yunduan launched the construction of this private garden for his parents' pleasure in their old age. It took 19 years for Pan Yunduan to built the garden. Later, due to all kinds of reasons the garden was heavily destroyed. After several large-scale re-constructions since the foundation of People's Republic of China in the year 1949, Yuyuan was finally opened to the public in 1961.

China 's ancient gardens generally can be divided into two kinds namely the royal garden in north China and the private garden in south China . Yuyuan Garden belongs to the second one. Built in a style that Suzhou gardens often take, Yuyuan garden is characterized by exquisite layout, beautiful scenery and the artistic architecture. Each pavilion, hall, stone and stream in the garden can express the quintessence of South China landscape design from Ming and Qing dynasties. Yuyuan Garden can be divided into six spots, with each having its special scene and beauty. There are altogether 30 scenic spots in this garden.
Every year, many tourists from both home and abroad come to see the beauty of the Yuyuan Garden.
