Glimpse of China
Guizhou

Lying in the east part of Yungui Plateau in South West China, a well-known tourist site--Guizhou Province who gained its name by Mountain Gui is characterized by its natural sceneries and profound ethnic culture. Over the tens and thousands of years, numerous odd caves and various-sized stone forests were sprung up by the Karst relief and the heavenly creations in Guizhou Province which looks simple, primitive and imposing. Dominated by mountains and hills, the topography in Guizhou is quiet complex with sky-reaching peaks, eccentric rocks, spraying springs, colorful waterfalls, vast lakes, recessive ravines, which results in a vertical temperature variation. So an old saying goes that "there are four seasons in a mountain, there will be in another day ten miles away". The number of cloudy days in Guizhou Province, every year, is much more than that of rest provinces in China with only 3 to 4 hours' sunshine break every day. Hereby "There is scarcely 3 constant sunny days happened in Guizhou" becomes the best description of Guizhou Province.

Guizhou Province enjoys, with a population of 12 million people taking up 35% of total in Guizhou Province, a great variety of minority nationalities including 17 nationalities like Han, Miao, Dong, Buyi, Yi, Shui, Wolao and so on. A large amount of guests from home and abroad are extremely fascinated by the enthnic strange customers of cook, costumes, accommodations, weddings, funerals, rites and architectures. Every year, the number of enthnic festivals has been up to 1,000 or so.

The folk peculiarity of Guizhou minorities is splendid and unprecedented also. People will always stunning at such cases like drum tower of minority Dong and Fengxi Bridge, Diaojiao house (a kind of bamboo and wood house)of minority Miao, the stone-stockade village of minority Buyi, the exquisite silvery ribbon, the gorgeous peach-blossom wax printing, colorful ethnic costumes, Nuo Opera, Lusheng ( a kind of wind musical instrument)and bronze drum. Especially, the buildings and hair ornaments of villages of minority Miao is fairly different with that of other villages.

The folk peculiarity of Guizhou minorities is rather primitive, simple and mysterious than those of other Provinces in South West China. Most of them are still keeping on a self-sufficient economy which was lingered thousands of years ago. The "authentic" folk peculiarity of Guizhou Province is a kind of very scarce travel resource.
