Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of Lunar Calendar. It is celebrated in memory of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet of Chu in Warring Period. He drowned himself because the emperor did not accept his proposal so that the kingdom was conquered. People strived to rescue him by boat but failed. They fed fish cooked rice to save his body. Later, the day of Qu Yuan's death became a festival.
Dragon Boat
Just as the name indicates, dragon boat race is the major activity and it has different meanings in different areas. In Jiangsu and Zhejiang province, it is held also in memory of Qiu Jin, a female democratic revolutionist. Such race is also very popular in Taiwan and Hong Kong. It is even widespread into neighboring countries and England.
Zongzi
Zongzi, a pyramid-shaped mass of glutinous rice wrapped in leaves, is a particular food in Dragon Boat Festival. Fillings include Chinese date, bean paste, meat, ham and egg yolk.
Silk bag
To exorcise evil spirits, people usually drink red orpiment alcohol and children wear cinnabar and red orpiment wrapped in a smart silk bag. The bag is of various shapes and colors.
Calamus and mugwort
Calamus and mugwort are hung on the door of houses everywhere. The special aroma they send out can get rid of insects and purify air.
