
The story "Zhong Kui assigned his younger sister to marry with others" tells that a friend of him named Du Ping was very benevolent to him. Du Ping not only helped him to attend the court examination but also donated money for his burial ceremony. So after he died and his soul became an immortal Taoist, he made up his mind to repay a debt of gratitude to Du Ping. On a night of the New Year's Eve, immortal Taoist Zhong Kui assigned his younger sister to marry with Du Ping for his thanksgiving. From then on, the story was enchanted as a beautiful legend by people and regarded as a popular theme of Chinese painting.

In China, a holy man who looks very ugly and sinister wearing long bear is often worshiped at many Chinese home. He, named Zhong Kui in Chinese, is regarded as an immortal who can wipe off the evils at any time. Zhong Kui, an ancient Chinese intellectual who had never achieved his ambitions in Tang Dynasty (618----907), was a very tragedy man under the critical imperial examination system.

Like many of others, he spent most of his time learning Confucianism classics just as to find a decent job in government. But when he attended the final examination inspected by emperor himself, his ugly looking induced the emperor's great disgust soon. So he was kept out of the examination court by emperor for his atrocious looking not like the looking a intellectual should have. He felt very sorrowful on his way back home. At last, he committed suicide in a great desperation.
