City In Brief

Chongqing is located in the upper reach of the Yangtze River. It is China's fourth municipality after Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin and the largest city in Southwest China. It is a hub of water and land communications and an important industrial center in China. It is also the starting point for a cruise on the Yangtze River to visit the scenic spots, the world famous Three Gorges Dam Project and historical sites along its banks.

Chongqing has a long history of more than 3,000 years. It was originally called Jiangzhou, Yuzhou and then Gongzhou, before getting its present name nearly 800 years ago. Many dynasties have set up various administrative institutions there, which endowed the city with brilliant cultural recourses and tourist attractions. And also Chongqing is the symbol of Yangtze River Civilization and the cradle of Bayu culture.

Chongqing is also called the "Mountain City" or "River City". Why? Walking on the streets of the city, you can easily find some slops between the architectures. It is completely a city built on the mountains! That is why you can hardly find any one riding bicycle or motor bike on the road. But you can easily find porters with rops and sticks. They are a typical group of workers who make living by carrying goods for others.

Besides taking Yangtze cruise ship to Yichang, which is the goal for most travelers to Chongqing, the city itself is also worth visiting for its cultural heritage, such as Dazu Grottoes, which stores more than 50,000 Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian rock carvings, Chongqing Museum, which a large number of antiquities spanning over 3000 years history, as well as Ci Qi Kou ancient town.

For free time, you can walk freely on the pedestrian street of Liberation Monument area and Chao Tian Men seaport or taste famous local hot pot or local dishes. In Chongqing, there are three kinds of traffic tools: bus or taxi, cable car and light rail train (similar to metro). By taking the cable car, you can have a bird view of the buildings located at both sides of Yangtze River.

Chongqing is not a modern city as Beijing and Shanghai, but it is a memorable city with typical features which await your exploration!
