Attractions: Gulangyu Island Nanputuo Temple
Gulangyu Island
Gulangyu Island is widely recognized as "the Garden on the Sea" with natural beauty, a quiet atmosphere and buildings of various architectural styles . It is located southwest of Xiamen City , from which tourists can get there by steamship in about 5 minutes. "Gulang" means "drum waves", for the waves pounding the reef sound like the beating of a drum when the tide comes in.
Since only electric-powered vehicles are allowed to enter the island, the air is fresh, and birds are always singing on the trees. Tourists are free from noise and pollution. There are islets, bays, flowers, trees, pavilions and terraces along the ring road. The island is also surrounded by natural coast bath square and the fantastic rocks. Sunshine Rock on one of the mountains should be the most typical and attractive one which anyone will feel regretful to ignore. When the sun rises, the light illuminates the granite in Sunlight Temple and the rocks are bathed with sunlight. In a word, it is a natural beauty. Nanputuo Temple
Nanputuo Temple was originally built in Tang Dynasty and destroyed in the warfare during Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). During the reign of Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722), it was rebuilt into a Buddhist Temple and named Nanputuo Temple . It is at south of Putuo Mountain (in Zhejiang province) which is one of four famous Buddhist mountains. Each year, in spring, summer and autumn, large scale anniversary activities of Nanputuo Temple are held in honor of the birthday of Guanyin (one of traditional Chinese immortals). Many people pray for health and fortune there, and also taste well-known Nanputuo dishes. On the top of the mountain, beautiful seaport scenery can be seen.
The temple consists of four main buildings. In Tian Wang Dian (Hall of Heavenly Kings) stand the statues of four Heavenly Kings. In the center of the hall stands a fat Buddha, Maitreya or Milefo, representing the Buddha of the future, also known as the Laughing Buddha, with a broad smile, bare chest and exposed paunch. Mahavira Hall has the statues of the Trinity of the Three Ages (Present, Past and Future). In Dabei Hall, four Statues of Avalokitesvara are enshrined on a lotus-flower base. Sutra-Keeping Pavilion houses thousands of Buddhist scriptures, Buddha images from Burma , ivory Sculptures, wood sculptures, bronze bells, incense burner and other works of art.
