City Guide:
Dunhuang is located in the west of Hexi Corridor of Gansu province. During Han and Tang dynasties, it was not only a vital trading post located on the "Silk Road" but also a military headquarter for the operation in the Western Region.
"Dun" means "huge", and "huang" means "prosperous." The city is famous for its prosperity and profound cultural background. Early at the end of Primitive Society, people had been living here and started the primitive agricultural technique. Many pictures on rock by nomadic tribes are kept till now.
Along the highway of the city, there are many mirages, which led many ancient merchant caravans astray into the "desert of death". In the past ancient, Dunhuang was where caravans from Central China to West Region restored themselves before they went into Taklimakan Desert .
Mogao Grottoes are the largest and the most well-preserved Buddhist art palace.
