Elephant Trunk Hill
Elephant Trunk Hill is situated in the southeast of Guilin city and west bank of Li River. It has a history of 3.6 hundred million years. It looks like an elephant leisurely drawing water from the river with its long trunk. With an elevation of 200 meters, the hill towers 55 meters above the water, measuring 108meters long and 100 meters wide.
On top of the hill stands Puxian Pagoda. It was built in Ming Dynasty(1368-1644) and looks like the handle of a sword. Between the trunk and the legs of the elephant is a full-moon like cave, penetrating the hill from side to side. When water waves under gleaming moonlight, the scene is exceedingly enchanting. So people nicknamed it "Moon-over-Water Cave".
In and out of the cave are over 70 carvings and inscriptions from the Tang and Song dynasties, of which the most well known is a poem by Lu You (1125-1210), one of the four great poets of Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).
