Li River

Li RiverThe crystal clear Li River is located amid steep peaks hung with waterfalls. It originates in Mountain Cat in Xinan County in the northeast of Guilin , making its way for 170 kilometers, passing through Guilin , Yangshuo to the outlet of Gongchen River in Pingle County . Along the 83 kilometers riverbank, numerous natural wonders, rolling peaks, steep cliffs, verdant hills, exquisite rocks and clear water constitute a fascinating hundred-mile picture gallery.

Li River cruise starts from Guilin downstream to Yangshuo, depending on the season and water level. It is a journey of about eighty kilometers and seven to eight hours.

Gorgeous Karst peaks are at each bend of the limpid river. Each peak has an imaginative name with a legendary story. Most of them are mystical fairy and love stories. A Chinese writer vividly described the delightful beauty of the Li River in his poem "The River looks like a blue silk ribbon and the mountains resemble emerald hairpins."

School kids and fisherman float by on bamboo rafts. Fishermen on bamboo rafts use strong lights hanging over the water to attract the fish. The cormorants, which are tethered with rings round their necks, catch the fish and then disgorge them for the fishermen.    more>>

Elephant Trunk Hill

Elephont Trunk HillElephant Trunk Hill is situated in the southeast of Guilin city and west bank of Li River. It has a history of 3.6 hundred million years. It looks like an elephant leisurely drawing water from the river with its long trunk. With an elevation of 200 meters, the hill towers 55 meters above the water, measuring 108meters long and 100 meters wide.

On top of the hill stands Puxian Pagoda. It was built in Ming Dynasty(1368-1644) and looks like the handle of a sword. Between the trunk and the legs of the elephant is a full-moon like cave, penetrating the hill from side to side. When water waves under gleaming moonlight, the scene is exceedingly enchanting. So people nicknamed it "Moon-over-Water Cave".

In and out of the cave are over 70 carvings and inscriptions from the Tang and Song dynasties, of which the most well known is a poem by Lu You (1125-1210), one of the four great poets of Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).

Seven Star Park

Seven Star ParkSeven Stars Park is approximately one kilometer from the downtown area of Guilin, on the eastern side of Li River at the end of Jiefang East Road . The park named for four peaks on Putuo Hill and three peaks on Crescent Hill takes the model of seven stars in the Big Bear constellation.

Putuo Peak is the most attractive for its karst caves and pavilions. Seven Star Cave is a mysterious land of stalactites, stone pillars and rock formations as a result of carbonate deposition. It has been eroded by water over thousands of years. Hua Bridge is famous for its elegant style. It was originally built in Song Dynasty and rebuilt in 1965.

Reed Flute Cave

Reed Flute CaveReed Flute Cave is five kilometers to the northwest of the City. The cave got its name from the verdant reeds growing outside, with which people make flutes. It takes about one hour to appreciate the 240-meter-long cave. There are various stalactites, stone pillars and rock formations resulting from carbonate deposition. People gave many beautiful names to these fantastic formations, such as Crystal Palace , Dragon Pagoda, Virgin Forest , Flower and Fruit Mountain and so on. It is impossible to take photos without special equipment, for the light inside is not sufficient for exposure.

Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces

Although there are terraces everywhere in the mountain area of South China , it is extraordinary to see a terrace as big as the dragon ridge terrace. Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces is large scale rice terraces built into the hillside with altitude from 300 meters to 1,100 meters. It is called "The champion of the terrace world". The coiling line spiraling up from the mountain foot to the top makes the mountain look like a huge snail from far distance. There are layers on layers of terraces, high and low. The Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces was built in Yuan Dynasty and was still going on till the beginning of Qing Dynasty for more than 650 years. It is 27 kilometers from Long Sheng County and 80 kilometers from Guilin city.

 Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge

Wind and Rain BridgeSan Jiang County is an autonomous region mainly consisting of Dong ethnic group, which accounts for more than 54% of the people in the whole county. It has marvelous scenery of Dong stockade villages. They are special and different from other places. Most of them are built on either side of rivers or brooks, and people lived opposite with each other across the water. Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge is a wood-covered corridor bridge with pavilions and benches constructed above the Linxi River of San Jiang County. It is the largest wind and rain bridge and one of the artistic treasures of Chinese wood architectures. The whole bridge looks like a long corridor. The most amazing thing is that pieces of wood in the bridge are closely jointed without using nails.
