As the capital city of Guizhou province, Guiyang is situated at the east of Yungui Plateau (Guizhou and Yunnan Plateau) of China, in the central part of the province. It covers an area of 8,038 square kilometers and is inhabited by a population of 3.06 million of Han, Miao, Buyi, Dong, Yi, Shi, Hui, Gelao, Zhuang, Yao and Tujia nationalities. Topographically speaking, the city is in a high terrain with the average altitude more than 900 to 1000 meters. The whole city is dotted with basins and lakes of different size; with many places of Karst features.
Guiyang has a long history. It was once the place where the Yelang ancient nationality gathered. In 1941, Guiyang city was officially proclaimed to be the municipality. Prior to that, Guiyang was only a county in the Han Dynasty, called Shunyuan Town in the Yuan Dynasty, Guiyang County in the Ming Dynasty respectively. It was renamed as Guiyang County in the year 1913.
Tourists come to Guiyang not only for its scenic spots: Baihua Lake Scenic Area and Qianling Park, but also for its local flavor: Maotai Liquor, Changwangmian as well as the Wax printing.
