Hunan province with its beautiful capital Changsha is located in the south of the famous Dongting Lake, hence the name Hunan, which means the south of the lake in Chinese. It is called "Xiang" for short, because of its longest river, Xiang River.
Hunan covers an area of 210,000 square kilometers and is inhabited by a population of 64,000,000.There are altogether 13 prefecture-level cities and one Tujia and Miao minority autonomous prefecture. Hunan has a good geographic location with convenient transportation. It borders Hubei on the north, Jiangxi on the east, Guangdong on the south, Sichuan and Guangxi on the west. Due to its important geological position, it serves as a strategic junction between the east and west, north and south and a hub of communication in south China.
Hunan province has long been known as its rich tourist resources and attractions. The tourist attractions in Changsha include Yuelu Academy, a high education institute and cultural center of the Changsha city; Hunan Provincial Museum with a collection of 110,000 objects, including 763 pieces of first class cultural relics; the Dongting Lake, the second largest fresh water lake in China; the Mountain Hengshan, one of the five famous mountains in China and so on. Hunan has many other features to offer to its tourists.
