Nanchang is located in the central part of Jiangxi Province. As the capital of Jiangxi province, Nanchang is the political, economic and cultural center of the province. Jiangxi covers an area of 74,236 square kilometers and is inhabited by a population of 1.57 million. Topographically speaking, most of the city is covered by hills and it has a great number of lakes, such as the Qingshan Lake, East Lake, South Lake and so on.
The history of Nanchang city can be traced back to more than 5,000 years ago. Over 5,000 years ago, ancestors of present-day residents used flint implements to exploit this rich land. The town was first built in 200 BC. In the fifth year of the reign of the Han Emperor, Gaozu (202 BC), Yuzhang Jun (Jun was an ancient administrative division equal to a present-day prefecture) was set up, which governed a county named Nanchang. The city is also known as a heroic city because of the August 1 Nanchang Uprising in the year 1927 led by Zhou Enlai and Zhude.
Most tourists come here to see the beauty and architecture art of the Tengwang Pavilion, which is one of the most famous Three Pavilions in Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze River)
