Xining , as the capital of Qinghai Province , is located in the eastern part of the province. Topographically, Xining is a slope down from northwest to southeast. The city covers an area of 7.671 square kilometers and is inhabited by a total population of 1.11 million of Han, Hui, Manchu, Tibetan, Sala and Mongolia nationalities.
The history of Xining can be traced back to 2,000 years ago. The city was originally called Xipingting. Xining also served as a capital in Nan Liang Dynasty. It is also the key point of the south branch of the Silk Road .
