City Guide:

Jinan is the provincial capital city of Shandong Province. It is situated in the mid-west of Shandong Province, near Mt. Tai to the south and Yellow River to the north. It covers an area of 8,227 square kilometers with a population of 5.49 million.

The city is the political, economic and cultural center of Shandong Province. Since Neolithic Period, there have been inhabitants. Some 3,600 years ago, the city was built with enclosing walls and called Lu. Five hundred years later, it was renamed as Jinan for it was located to the south of the ancient Jishui River. In 1116, Jinan was established as a prefecture, and in 1368 it became the provincial capital.

With a number of natural springs, it is also known as the "City of Springs". Baotu Spring is the most famous.
