Mt. Tai
Mt. Tai is one of the five sacred mountains in China, known as "the first mountain under heaven", four others being Mt. Hua in the west, Mt. Heng in the south, Mt. Heng in the north and Mt. Song in the center. It is located in Tai'an city, neighboring Qufu---the hometown of Confucius to the south and Jinan---the provincial capital city of Shandong Province to the north.
The main peak of Mt. Tai rises steeply 1,545 meters above sea level. It is said that in ancient times, 72 kings offered sacrifices to heaven and earth on Mt.Tai. Mt.Tai is famous for sunrise, sunset, sea of clouds and the golden belt of the Yellow River. The sunrise is the most impressive view. Foggy clouds enveloping summit make the mountain a fairyland-like sea of clouds. The Buddha light shines on the top of the mountain like a multicolored aureole, which is believed to bring luck to people who are shined upon.
Since 1987, International Mt. Tai- Climbing Festival was held from Sept. 6 to 8 every year. The festival is a striking social event for tourism, sports, culture, business and trade. The climbing contest is held in different groups depending on participants' nationalities, sex, and age. During the festival, an opening ceremony is held, including large song and dance show, negotiations on tourist commodities, business and trade as well as various special tours. It has become a magnificent annual event fascinating hundreds of thousands of tourists to Tai'an each year.
In 1987, Mt. Tai was listed as the natural and cultural heritage of the world.
