Jade Buddha Temple
Jade Buddha Temple is located at Anyuan Road in the west of the center of Shanghai city. The Jade Buddha Temple was first built in 1882 during the reign of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty and was rebuilt in the year 1982 with the name of "Jade Buddha Temple ". It is a Buddhist Temple .
The temple with a total area of 8,400 square meters is divided into three halls. The three halls are the Heavenly King Hall, the Grand Hall and the Abbot's Chamber. This famous Buddhist Monastery houses two jade statues of Sakyamuni, hence the name of the temple "Jade Buddha Temple". One is in a sitting position, and the other is in a reclining position. The seated Buddha, encrusted with jewels is said to weight 1,000 kilograms. Both statues are of great artistic value and regarded as treasures of Buddhism in China. The two precious jade Buddhist statues are not only rare cultural relics but also porcelain artworks. Both the Sitting Buddha and the Recumbent Buddha are carved with whole white jade. The sparkling and crystal-clear white jade gives the Buddha the beauty of sanctity and makes them more vivid.
Yuyuan Garden
Yuyuan Garden, maybe the most celebrated classical Chinese garden in Shanghai, is situated in the northeastern part of Shanghai with a long history of more than 400 years. It belongs to the classical private Chinese Garden .
The history of Yuyan Garden can be dated back to the Qing Dynasty. In 1559, a Ming official named Pan Yunduan launched the construction of this private garden for his parents' pleasure in their old age. It took 19 years for Pan Yunduan to built the garden. Later, due to all kinds of reasons the garden was heavily destroyed. After several large-scale re-constructions since the foundation of People's Republic of China in the year 1949, Yuyuan was finally opened to the public in 1961.
China's ancient gardens generally can be divided into two kinds namely the royal garden in north China and the private garden in south China . Yuyuan Garden belongs to the second one. Built in a style that Suzhou gardens often take, Yuyuan garden is characterized by exquisite layout, beautiful scenery and the artistic architecture. Each pavilion, hall, stone and stream in the garden can express the quintessence of South China landscape design from Ming and Qing dynasties. Yuyuan Garden can be divided into six spots, with each having its special scene and beauty. There are altogether 30 scenic spots in this garden.
Every year, many tourists from both home and abroad come to see the beauty of the Yuyuan Garden .
Nanjing Road
Nanjing Road is in the center of downtown Shanghai. It is the busiest street in China and is regarded as the "No.1 street in China."
Nanjing Road is the first commercial road in Shanghai. It was once called Huayuan Long ( Park Street ). After the Opium War (1840-1842), Shanghai became a treaty port. Nanjing Road was first the British Concession, then the International Settlement. Many foreign goods are imported from here, so it became the earliest shopping street in China .
Nanjing Road starts at the bund in the east and ends in the west at the junction of Jingan Temple and Yan'an West Street. Today Nanjing Road is a must-see tourist destination attracting thousands of tourists from all over the world. Nanjing Road is now changed into a walking street to make convenience for the shoppers from both home and abroad. There are altogether more than 600 businesses on Nanjing road which offer countless famous brands with superior quality and new fashions. People can also enjoy the KFC, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and other world-famous food in either sides of the street. What is more, approximately a hundred traditional stores and specialty shops still provide choice silk goods, jade, embroidery, wool and clocks and so on.
Shanghai Xintiandi
Located in the south of Huaihai Zhong Lu, the center of Shanghai City, Shanghai Xintiandi is a fashionable pedestrian street composed of Shikumen architecture style, the construction style in the middle of 18th century and modern architecture style. Shanghai Xintiandi is where "yesterday and tomorrow meet in Shanghai today".
Shanghai Xintiandi is unique because of its concept of construction. It retains the antique walls, tiles and exterior of the Shikumen housing of old Shanghai , which seems to be telling people beautiful stories about the history of Shanghai in the 1920s to 1930s. And also, its interior embodies a totally different world of international gallery, bars and cafes, boutiques or theme restaurants, having all conveniences such as an automatic elevator, central air-conditioner and broadband network. Its boutique keeps in pace with international fashion.
Shanghai Museum
The world-renowned Shanghai Museum is located in the west of Nanjing Road. It is a museum of ancient Chinese art and was first built in the year 1952. In the year 1959, it was removed to No.16 Henan South Road and was later removed to its present day location People's Square in the year 1900. With a total collection of over 120,000 pieces of cultural relics, the museum is especially famous for its treasures of bronzes, ceramics, paintings and calligraphy. There are altogether 10 permanent exhibit areas. They are Gallery of Ancient Chinese Bronze, Gallery of Ancient Chinese Calligraphy, Gallery of Ancient Chinese Ceramic, Gallery of Ancient Chinese Furniture of the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty, Gallery of Ancient Chinese Jade, Gallery of Arts and Crafts by Chinese Minority Groups, Gallery of Ancient Chinese Numismatics, Gallery of Ancient Chinese Paintings, Gallery of Ancient Chinese Seals, Gallery of Ancient Chinese Sculpture.
