Jiu Zhaigou Scenic Area
Located in Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture , about 450 km north of Chengdu , Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area is famous for majestic and unparalleled emerald lakes, layered waterfalls, colorful forests, snow peaks and Tibetan folk villages. "Jiuzhaigou" refers to the 9 Tibetan villages situated in the valley.
It is a home of densely growing conifers and broadleaf trees, and precious animal species such as the giant panda, golden monkey, and white-lip deer.
Waterfalls are the core of the scenery in Jiuzhaigou. They are created between lakes on different levels with water flowing down the cliffs covered with trees and oozing through the tree trunks. The trees in the primitive forest are thick with leaves that block the sunlight. As the height and temperature vary, plants are distributed distinctively, with the broadleaf forest at the foot of the mountain, and coniferous forest at the top.
In 1992, this scenic area was recognized to be the world natural heritage.
Dujiangyan Irrigation Weir
Dujiangyan Irrigation Weir is located in the city of Dujiangyan, which is about 30 minutes driving from Chengdu by high way.
For two thousand years, Dujiangyan Weir has been drawing water from Minjiang River to Chengdu plain so as to form "the land of plenty". The great contributor who had achieved such outstanding project is Li Bing, governor of Shu prefecture in the third century B.C. Due to the attention of the rulers in past dynasties and management of special official, Dujiang Weir went through more than 2,000 years and functioned as the enormous water conservancy all the time. First project of the canal is quite scientific. Even today, it can still be called the most high-level achievement. The Temple of Two Kings is built to commemorate the accomplishment of Li Bing and his son.
Yuzui, a long and narrow dike built in the center of the Minjiang River, is the main body of the project, named for its shape of fish mouth designed to lessen water resistance. Feishayan is the second major project in the irrigation works of Dujiang Weir. Its main function is to release floodwater and sand out of the inner river. Baopingkou is the throat by which water of Inner River goes into Chengdu plain, strictly controlling the flow.
