Major Tourist Cities
Tibet

Tibet Autonomous Region borders India, Burma, Bhutan, Sikkim, and Nepal. It is of strategically military importance in China, covering a massive 1,220,000 square kilometers with the smallest population. The plateau is surrounded by the highest mountain ranges, the Himalaya to the south, the Karakoram to the west, and the Kunlun to the north. Mt.Everest, 8848 meters, is the world's highest mountain. That is why it is called "the roof of the world".

Lhasa is the provincial capital city of Tibet, as well as being one of the most famous historical and tourist cities for its exotic culture and religion. According to the history, not until the 7th century can Tibetans be recognized as a race of people. The rising Yarlung Dynasty or Tubo Kingdom unified Tibet and became an aggressive power. Tibetan recorded history began in 127 BC when the first emperor Nyatri Tsenpo was crowned.

Songtsen Gampo is an outstanding king of Tibetan people. During the first half of the 7th century AD, he created an empire that largely corresponds to the present-day extension of the Tibetan cultural realm. The two Princesses he married, from Nepal and Tang brought them peace as well as Buddhism.  Samye Monastery and Buddhism were recognized as State religion. The Buddhism influence spread as the expansion of Tibetan empire continued. Nowadays, most Tibetans are faithful Buddhists while a few believe in the old Bon. Islam and Catholicism also have a few followers in Lhasa and Yanjing respectively.

Tibet offers the most accessible religious monuments and tourist attractions. The religious temples include Potala Temple and Jokhang Temple, Tashilunpo Monastery and Kumbum; natural wonders include Mt. Everest and Yamdrok Yumtso Lake. Namtso Lake is the highest saltwater lake in the world and the second largest saltwater lake in China. Yarlong Tsangpo Canyon is the largest canyon in the world and the home of rare species.
