Lhasa is officially the provincial capital city of Tibetan Autonomous Region. In Tibetan, Lhasa means "the land of the gods" or "holy place". As one of the highest cities in the world, it is 3,760 meters above the banks of the Lhasa River and nicknamed as "sunlight city". It occupies an area of 30,000 square kilometers with a population of 400,000, of which 87% are Tibetans. It is located in the southern part of the Tibetan high plateau at an altitude of 3,650m above sea level, roughly on the same longitude as Cairo .
It is the political, economic, cultural and religious center of Tibet. It was originally called Rasa, renamed by King Songtsen
Gampo in the seventh century when he moved his capital here from Yarlung Valley .
More and more people from all over the world have been attracted for its unique scenery, long history, exotic culture, mysterious religion and spectacular monuments. The city has many Buddhist monuments and was the seat of the Dalai Lama; flocks of pilgrims have been trekking to the city for worship.
Patala Palace was the religious and political center of old Tibet and the winter residence of Dalai Lamas.
Jokhang Temple is the masterpiece of Han, Tibetan and Nepalese architectural techniques with various exotic and sacred sculptures.
Namtso Lake is respected as one of the three holiest lakes and the seat of Paramasukha Chakrasamvara by Buddhist pilgrims.
