Turpan lies in the Turpan Basin at the southern foot of the Tianshan Mountains in the eastern part of Xinjiang Autonomous Region. Turpan covers an area of 67,900 square kilometers and is inhabited by a population of 400,000 of the Han, Hui and Urgar nationalities.
Turpan, the same as other cities in China has a long history. It was once called Gushi in ancient times. It used to be the place where the State of South Cheshi and the South Cheshi Court were set up during the Han dynasty.
Today's Turpan has gradually become one of the most attractive scenic spots in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Turpan boasts abundant historical and natural scenery as well as peculiar folk customs of the Uygur people, the main resident group in Xinjiang. The city of Turapn enjoys a high reputation among travelers both at home and abroad.
The most famous and popular tourist attractions in Turpan include the Ancient City of Gaochang, ruin of an ancient city, where people can see the culture of the once magnificent state Cheshi; and the Bizalkik Thousand Buddha Caves, where one can see the art of both grottoes and murals in ancient times.
An investigation indicated that about 95 percent of visitors to Xinjiang choose Turpan as an indispensable destination. Turpan is becoming more and more beautiful and attractive.
