Kunming is also the political, economical and cultural center of Yunnan and the provincial center for transport, science and technology, thus one of the most popular tourists destination in South China . The city covers an area of 15,560 square kilometers and is inhabited by a population of 4,000,000 of the Han, Yi, Bai, Miao, Dai and Hani nationalities.
Kunming has a long history of more than 2,400 years. It was once the gateway to the famous Silk Road that facilitated trade with Tibet , Sichuan , Myanmar and India .
Today's Kunming is famous for its rich tourist resources, not only because the region features a consistently warm climate, but also due to its wonderful landscapes. Among these attractions the most dramatic are Stone Forest (Shilin), Dianchi Lake and Golden Temple.
Kunming is also well known for many delicious local dishes; the most famous ones are Across Bridge Rice Noodle and Xuanwei Ham. One can enjoy them both at local famous restaurants or night market.
